Good manners have always been a priority in my family. From a very young age I was taught to say please and to give thanks on every appropriate occasion, and I, in turn, taught my children to do the same.
God also expects His children to use good manners when we boldly come before His throne to make our requests. Psalm 107:1, instructs us to give thanks to the Lord “for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!” We are also instructed to offer God thanks for His peace that can abide in our hearts.
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15
There is another kind of thanks that greatly pleases God.
Giving thanks for the good, for the beautiful, for the blessing, easily rolls off the tongue. But what about giving thanks when nothing seems good, beautiful, or blessed? Giving thanks in the hard, in the hurt, in “all circumstances” when it is a “sacrifice of thanksgiving” greatly pleases God. Why? Because giving thanks before the good, before the healing, before the blessing requires faith. And without faith, it is impossible to please God.
Give Him your thanks in the good times and give Him your thanks by faith in the hard times because you believe He is working all things for your good and His glory. Amen.
