Welcome back to Take 5!: Every Good Gift. Take 5!s are short, quick Bible studies to help you start your busy day in the Word of God. Please get your journal and pen and settle down in God’s presence. Before you start your study time, take a moment to pray and ask God to guide you during your time in His word.

Remember, endurance yields the crown of life!. (If you would like a free, printable PDF of this quick Bible study, please scroll to the bottom to sign up.)

Please pray and then read the following verses from James 1.

16Don’t be deceived, my beloved brothers.

17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation nor turning shadow.

18 Of his own will He gave birth to us by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of His creatures.

19 So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;

20 for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God. James 1:16-20 WEB

1. We left James 1:15 with the result of sin, which is death. Because of sin, James 1:16 opens with what admonition?

Do not be deceived. Do not choose sin and death, and do not think God is the one who tempts us to follow sin and death. We are tempted when we are drawn away by our own desire and enticed.

2. Instead of temptation, what kinds of things does God give us (v. 17)?

He gives us good things and perfect gifts. Good in the Greek transliterates as agathos, which means good, beneficial, agreeable, pleasant, and happy. And perfect means finished, grown, brought to its end.

3. Why does God give us good, beneficial things (v. 17)?

Because He is the Father of Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. He always gives us good things.

4. Please go back and read verse 18 again and answer the following question. How and why did God create us?

God created us because He wanted to. First fruits signify something that is set apart for God. Mathew Henry defines first fruits as God’s portion and treasure*.

5. Therefore, since we are set aside as God’s portion and treasure, how should we act (v.19)?

We should act the same way as God acts toward us, longsuffering and slow to anger. God did not bring us to righteousness through His anger and wrath. He drew us to Him by His grace, mercy, love, and forgiveness. The wrath of man will never produce the righteousness of God.

Please end your study time today by reading our verses one more time and thanking God for every good gift He has given you.

God Bless.
